Stüssy Pop-Up Shop
Event & experience design, 3D modelling, Visual & Interior design · 2024 · Stüssy · Retail/Fashion
The Stüssy Pop-Up Shop was an experiential retail project that focused on translating the brand’s roots in surf, streetwear, and graffiti culture into a physical space. The goal was to create a temporary shop concept that reflects the identity of the brand and encourages interaction, exploration, and product discovery.
Problem
While Stüssy has a strong digital and street presence, there is a lack of retail experiences that reflect the brand’s origin story and encourage deeper customer engagement. The challenge was to design a pop-up environment that brings Stüssy’s visual language, heritage, and culture into a branded physical experience to attract more audience and drive foot traffic.
Solution
We designed a retail environment that blends shopping with an interactive activity reflecting Stüssy’s roots in surf and graffiti culture. The layout encourages flow, exploration, and hands-on interaction, while the material and color choices align with the brand’s minimal, bold identity.

Brand Benchmark & Store Research
Bringing the Brand Heritage to Life

Stüssy is built on authenticity, subculture, and storytelling. Translating these values into a physical space requires a minimal layout, strong brand cues, and interactive elements.
We conducted primary research by visiting the Stüssy Toronto store and analyzing its branding applications. The space featured bold graphics, large-scale logos, minimal clothing racks, and a clean, modern interior. These insights informed our approach to product display and spatial layout in the pop-up.
Stüssy DNA originated from surf culture in California, where Shawn Stüssy began by hand-signing surfboards before evolving the gesture into a globally recognized streetwear identity.
To translate this heritage into the pop-up, we designed an interactive spray-painting station that allows visitors to customize surfboards and recreate the iconic graffiti-style logo. This experiential touchpoint connects users directly to the brand’s origin story, transforming its history into a participatory moment and adding an immersive, hands-on layer to the retail environment.

Concept 1
We began the design process by sketching several layout concepts for the pop-up. These early ideas explored different spatial flows, display arrangements, and ways to integrate the interactive surfboard painting experience. After evaluating multiple concepts, we selected concept 4 for the layout since it had the best balance for brand storytelling, visitor interaction, and product visibility.
After selecting the final concept, we refined the layout and developed a bubble plan and floor plan to define the spatial organization, user flow, and key interaction zones within the pop-up.

Inspiration & Moodboard
The moodboard draws inspiration from Stüssy’s roots in surf culture, graffiti, and streetwear. We explored materials, typography, photography, and spatial cues that reflect the brand’s bold yet minimal identity. These visual references helped define the direction for the pop-up’s interior, signage, and overall aesthetic.

Material, Colours, and Technology

We selected materials and colors that reflect Stüssy’s surf and streetwear heritage. The palette includes red oak, stainless steel, concrete, black, and off-white—creating a clean, industrial aesthetic. These finishes help reinforce the brand’s minimal identity while adding texture and depth within the space.
We integrated lighting and technology to enhance the user experience and support the visual identity of the shop. Bright directional lighting was used to highlight products and key display areas. QR codes were placed throughout the space to provide information, guide visitors, and connect them to branded digital content.
